RUSSIA
A portfolio of articles about the Russian society in May 2007:
Russians not interested in politics – The majority of Russian society is still far away from having a say in politics even 15 years after the clear structured Soviet system of society collapsed and a free economy and political system developed.
No Bread for Soviet Medals – 78-year-old Elisabeta Nefjedova cannot buy herself anything from the golden shimmering medals which are neatly attached to her Soviet uniform. Still she is wearing the 8 round plates proudly.
Money-hunting middle class – While in most western countries the middle class is characterised as boring and pedant, it is also seen as the guarantee for stability and democracy and as an indicator for social welfare. Looking at Russia’s new emerging Middle class this share is still very small and not interested in political democracy.
My money, my house, my car, my influence – The Rich still determine what happens in Russia’s politics and society
